Carton women have got the bug!

Unless you have been living under a rock, I don’t think any golfer could miss the massive push to get more women into golf this year. To play our part in this movement, the Academy set up a 6-week programme of golf lessons for women golfers at beginner level, (Get Into Golf), to kick-start first time golfers on the women’s scene. As a woman myself, naturally I was delighted to see this, but what I was more delighted to see was the amount of women members of Carton House organising practice groups together throughout the summer.

From short-game practice, to committing to hit 60 balls a day, I can honestly say I’m impressed with the dedication these women have for their golf games. Most of the women we encounter at the range have been included in the successful Carton House club teams that reached two finals this year! One of the team’s avid practiser commented, “the women are on tour!”. By the end of the summer I knew most of the team members by name, and found myself invested in their progress. Having spoken to a few of the team’s star players, they overall consensus was

1) that they’re wrecked from all the golf, and
2) that the competitive atmosphere has jumped started their motivation to practice.

For such a young club, the Carton House women have definitely proven themselves on the club championship circuit this year. It goes without saying, that one of the most persistent drivers for getting the women out golfing more is this year’s women’s captain, Ciara Greenwood. Ciara’s determination behind the scenes has set a high standard for both the professionals at the Academy and for next year’s captain. I’m excited to see this level of enthusiasm continue to grow along with the hunger to bring back an All-Ireland club final pennant throughout the 2020 season.
