Over the winter months, and coming into Autumn, is when we see a lot of golf clubs invest in their club teams. Off-season coaching is one of the best ways to build team morale, enhance motivation to practise and learn a few pointers. At the Academy, we call these ‘private groups’ usually arranged by team captains or junior convenor for their golf clubs.
For example, the Junior Convenor for Carton House set up private group lessons for the junior girls members. They arranged monthly group lessons for four separate groups from November 2021 to April 2022, which I was lucky enough to coach. These groups are a great way for the girls to make friends in their golf club while practising their skills and picking up a few pointers. Another example would be Niall coaching the Blackrock College Club teams. These teams arranged once off training days at the Academy, tailored especially by the coach in order to suit all of the player’s abilities.
As well as this, we’ve had senior cup teams and mixed teams book in for private group coaching before All-Ireland finals to help get in the zone before their tournament. From being on club teams before, as well as coaching some of these groups, I wish more clubs would take advantage of this service.
To give you an insight into some of the benefits of these group sessions, below are a few things we have covered in previous groups:
- Putting clinic; practise drills and performance games
- Short game coaching; distance control and group challenges
- Long game lessons; technical changes and trackman data
Of course, each group is different, so it’s important to know what the group would like to achieve during these lessons and their current skill level. The length of the sessions can also vary depending on the needs of the group; we’ve booked private groups for 1 hour, 5 hours, and everything between.
