Back to School…. Class

September is here and so are our Junior Weekly Classes!

As the kids get back to school, we begin our preparation for welcoming back the young golfers who are enrolled in our junior weekly golf classes. Starting from the 6th of September, the junior golfers will be back in action, and we can’t wait. Currently, we have 8 golf classes aimed at juniors between the ages of 7 – 11 years. The purpose of these classes is to introduce juniors to the game, learn some new skills and have fun!

Our junior programme has grown considerably since this time 2019, when just 3 weekly golf classes were on offer. Even now with 8 classes scheduled, we still cannot cater for all the juniors looking to book in for the classes, and we apologise for this. Having said that, the first step to getting your junior involved in these classes is to sign up for our junior golf mailing list by clicking on the “Make an Enquiry” button on the website. The term for the classes usually lasts six or seven weeks and at the beginning of each term we offer any available spaces to the parents on this mailing list.

Since the demand for junior golf coaching is still rising, we added a new class for teenagers. Our new Teenage Weekly Class is for juniors who are too old for our original weekly classes but still want to get into the game through group coaching. This class is aimed at juniors between the ages of 12 – 16 years and runs on Monday evenings from 7 – 8pm. The benefits of group coaching, particularly for teenagers, stems from the friends they make while acquiring a new skill. The main difference between young juniors and teenagers is the hesitation or nervousness that arises around learning something new. A group class seems to cushion the embarrassment of not ‘getting it right’ straight away for teenagers while building friendships that help push them through the learning phase.

It’s important to understand that these golf classes can be seen as the first stepping stone to playing golf. When juniors have learned and practised the main skills for the game, we encourage them to push on, join a golf club and think about private golf lessons. It’s amazing to see some of the juniors, who started off in our weekly classes, now booking private tuition and coming back with various golfing stories and goals. Sometimes the opposite also happens, where juniors who are too young for the classes sign up for private lessons first. This gives the 4, 5 and 6-year-olds a chance to try the game and build the skills that prepare them to walk into the weekly classes when the opportunity arises.

If you have any questions about getting your junior started in golf, please feel free to give us a call or drop me an email at mary@bettergolf.ie with your questions.
